Harlem Entrepreneur Adopts 19 Teenaged Girls
On November 5, 2005, Pamela Salaam, Founder and Executive Director of GirlSpirit WomenSong Inc. (GSWS) publicly announced her adoption of 19 teenaged girls& Harriet's Heart. Harriet's Heart is a four year undertaking, honoring the legacy of Harriet Tubman, where 19 especially selected young ladies, each representing Tubman's 19 courageous journeys on the Underground Railroad, are guided from girlhood to womanhood via leadership and life skills trainings, through successful completion of high school, then onto the freedom of academic exploration, by raising more than 1 million dollars to support their college tuitions!
Harriet's Heart is a revitalization of the principle "It takes a whole village", challenging athletes, entertainers, professionals, civic leaders, elected officials and ordinary people to be a part of the solution, preparing leaders of tomorrow, embracing the role of educating and investing in our children today. Each of the 19 girls is dedicated to a distinct platform over the 4 year endeavor, engaging audiences with topics ranging from domestic violence to equal rights to child labor laws.
The 4 year journey & Sept 1st 2005 - July 31st 2009!
"I believe it is the responsibility of all of us to lead our children, our families and our communities to social leadership, economic strength, political promise and academic excellence! In honor of Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman, forward thinking journeys must continue. I know that ordinary people can make a change. Such is when and how we become Extra-Ordinary", says the proud surrogate mother of 19 girls, Salaam.
