Harriet’s Heart

On November 5, 2005, Pamela Salaam publicly announced her surrogate adoption of 19 teenaged girls, whom she lovingly calls Harriet’s Heart.  Harriet’s Heart is a groundbreaking 4 year undertaking, honoring the legacy of Harriet Tubman.  19 especially selected young ladies, each representing Tubman’s 19 courageous journeys on the Underground Railroad, are guided from girlhood to womanhood via leadership and life skills readiness, social etiquette and artistic expression, assuring successful completion of high school, then onto the freedom of academic exploration.  A goal is to raise Cash and resources to support their college educations!

From then on they have created a “Pay it Forward” concept to reassure that the lessons learned and bestowed upon these young women will be absorbed amongst thousands more.  Each Heart is given the responsibility to take on 19 girls of their own and teach them the life lessons needed to become empowering, educated, and influential young women in this society.  The lesson continues as each girl that is brought in to the Harriet’s Heart family takes an oath to mentor and inspire 19 others.
